Brief Overview of the Month of Mahe Ramadhan:
By Dr. Raza Dungersi

Ramadhan is the ninth month in the Muslim lunar calendar. The lunar month gives some months 29 days and others 30. That is to say, if the moon is sighted on coming Friday, fasting will commence on Saturday August, 21st, 2009. Or else, fasting will start on Sunday, August, 22nd, 2009. To be on safe side, it is highly recommended for Muslims to start fasting on Saturday, even if the moon is not sighted, with the “niyyah” (intention) of “mustahab” or for “Kadha”, if one has any.

The Arabic word “Ramada” means severe heat. The month of Ramadhan was named thus meaning the month of severe heat. Fasting causes, among other things, thirst and fatigue : the products of heat. Hence this month of fasting is called “ Ramadhan”. By some accounts, the word “Ramadhan” is one of the divine names; Masoomeen have therefore advised us, out of respect, to address this month as “Shahr Ramadhan”, or the month of Ramadhan and not simply Ramadhan.

The Prophet (s.a.w.w) described this month as the month of Allah, the month of Divine Blessings, Mercy and Forgiveness. The Prophet (s.a.w.w) also informed the believers that the month of Ramadhan was the best month, with the best days, the best nights and the best hours. In these days, acts of worship are accepted easily to that extent that the breaths of those who fast are counted as glorification of Allah, and the sleeps of those who fast are counted as acts of worship! Recitation of Quran, in this month, carries much more rewards than in other months of the year.

No wonder, therefore, that the Quran was revealed in total to the Prophet(s.a.w.w.) in this month and “Lailatul Qadr” – the night of destiny, too, is in this month.

May Allah give us all strength to fast in this month the way He wants us to fast and to worship Him the way He wishes us to worship. Aamin.

Mahe Ramadhan Mubarak!!!!!
